The Himalaya are changing faster than almost anywhere on Earth. Community-led conservation is already underway across the region, but much of it remains fragmented, short-term or cut off from the institutions needed to endure. This breakfast roundtable brings scientists, practitioners, policy specialists and philanthropic leaders together around one question: what would it take to turn promising local efforts into durable action at a landscape scale?

ATREE’s experience across the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalaya and India’s drylands shows that lasting conservation depends on more than a single intervention. It requires scientific evidence, community stewardship, secure livelihoods and responsive public institutions to reinforce one another over time. The panel will examine what that integrated approach looks like in practice—and what it asks of funders, researchers and conservation organisations working across the tropics. The conversation continues at a reception with the ATREE delegation, high above Manhattan at One World Trade Center.

Restored ecosystems and secure nature-based livelihoods are among our most direct forms of climate adaptation.

Climate change is experienced through landscapes—in forests and grasslands, water and soils, coasts and people’s livelihoods. Effective responses require long-term evidence, trusted local institutions and a pathway into public policy and practice.

For thirty years, ATREE has connected rigorous science with community-centred action, policy engagement and education across India’s most consequential ecosystems.
